Preferred and Applied Students Approaches to Studying at the International Islamic University - Malaysia

This study aims at determining Students perferred and actually used ``Approaches of Study, and whether there are statistically significant differences between the degree of preference and application. The effect of the demographic variables on the responses of the participants is investigated. The sample consists of 363 undergraduate students enrolled in 1999/2000 in the International Islamic University Malaysia. The instrument is Waughs version (1999) of the widely used ``Approaches to study questionnaire. The findings reveal that the participants prefer and apply the three approaches with different levels as follows: the strategic approach, the deep approach and the suface approach. There are also statistically significant differences between the level of preference and that of applicaiton. Statistically significant differences attributed to gender are observed concerning a number of subcategories. However the effect of students major and year of study are very limited. The findings are discussed in the light of the relevant findings of studies. The study ends with recommendations.
