Scholastic Achievement of Pupils in Enrichment Programs and how it is affected by Family Factors

Auther : Badr O. Al-Omar

The study tries to explore scholastic achievement of gifted pupils who are enrolled in enrichment programs. Data are gathered from 94 gifted pupils. The study aims at assessing:

1#Total achievement.

2#Score distribution of each subject.

3#Differences related to gender.

4#Finally, the impact of family demographic variables, such as, residence area, living with both parents, father education level, number of family members, and family income, on achievement. For total scholastic achievement (and all subjects) score distributions are negatively skewed. Females prove to have higher scholastic achievement in Islamic studies, mathematics, and science than males. Residential area prove not to have any impact on achievement. Pupils who live with both parents had better achievement in Islamic studies and Arabic. Fathers level of education significantly affects total achievement, English, and Social Studies. Family income proves to have substantial effect on Islamic Studies, Arabic, English and Social Studies. Results of multiple regression reveal that gender is important in predicting total achievement, Islamic Studies, and Social Studies. In addition, fathers education level significantly predicts achievement in Social Studies. Size of family is proven a good predictor of total achievement, English, Maths, and Science. Meanwhile, family income proves to be a significant predictor of achievement in English.
