Relationship between High School Students Perception of Classroom Environment, their Learning Styles, and Achievement in Chemistry

Auther : Hala T. Bakhsh

This study aimed at exploring the relationship between students perceptions of the classroom environment, their learning styles, and achievement in Chemistry for the Secondary School. The researcher used the descriptive and correlational method of research as being appropriate to the study aims. The Classroom Environment Perception Scale and The Learning Styles Inventory, and the students achievement scores in Physics in the second term of the year 2004 were administered to the subjects of the study which included 25 female students in their freshman high school year in Saudi Arabia. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was calculated to detect the relationship between variables of the study. Findings revealed that there is a statistically significant relationship between achievement in Chemistry and the students perceptions of their classroom environment, the real, favoured environment where there is participation, affiliation, open research, integration, rule clarity, appropriate physical environment, individualized learning, differentiated learning that pays attention to individual differences. The relationship becomes significantly greater when the classroom environment is more favoured. Findings also revealed a statistically significant relationship between achievement is science and learning styles on all dimensions of the learning styles inventory manipulated in this study (attitude, motivation, timing, concentration, information mining, selecting basic ideas, using aids, self-testing, choosing strategies); only the dimension of anxiety on the learning styles inventory was detected to be nagatively correlated with achievement in Chemistry.
