Educational thought of the First Teacher of Kuwait: Sheikh Y. AL-Qinaie

Auther : Dr. Bader M. Malek & Dr. Latefah H. Alkandari

The aim of this study is to highlight the bases of educational thoughts of Yusuf Bin Essa Al-Qinaie (1878-1973) and his contributions to the movement of educational revival in Kuwait. It also aims at clarifying the method of writing, the importance of his diwaniya (traditional gathering in mens reception room) as an educational way of teaching, his role in womens education, and ways of applying some of Al-Qinaies thoughts to our contemporary reform movement.

Results show that Al-Qinaie was a pioneer reformer, because he established the foundations of educational awakening in Kuwait, especially launching modern schools. Also, he made his diwaniya and wrote his books as tools for displaying culture, values, and concepts of tolerance. Al-Qinaie had a luminous vision in the emancipation of women, in which he called for educating and empowering women in order for them to play leading roles in developing the society. He rejected strongly that women are useless chattels, as many people thought at that time. Social reform was the main issue in Al-Qinaies method, even though he didnt leave out the political life and other issues in his work. Al-Qinaies educational thoughts can be used today to support the concepts of tolerance, empowering women, and enriching the school curriculum.
