The Teaching Skills of the General Diploma Student Teachers of Social Studies in Relation with their Achievement

    The present study aimed at identifying the teaching skill performance level and its relationship with achievement of the General Diploma student teachers of Social Studies at the College of Education, SQU.

    The observation sheet currently used in the teaching practice course was adopted by the researcher for the purpose of the study. This observation sheet consists of (30) items covering various teaching skills classified into seven dimensions and five-point Likert scale. A reliability check was conducted (0.68). The researcher used also a measure of achievement for student teachers; by Deanship of Admission at SQU.

   The sample of the study consisted of (40) student teachers of social studies enrolled for the General Diploma in the academic year 2002-2003.

    Means, standard deviation and t-test were used in statistical analysis. Main findings of the study: The performance of student teachers of social studies was below the educationally and professionally acceptable standard (80% or more). This was clear in twenty three teaching skills. Also there was a positive correlation between achievement and teaching performance. Higher achievers were found to have better teaching performance than lower achievers.

    In the light of these results, the researcher proposed some recommendations and suggestions.
