Auther : Abdullah Kh. Ambosaedi & Basma A. Al-Erimi

The aims of the study is to measure the readability level of the first secondary biology textbook as related to gender, the academic achievement in biology and the academic achievement in Arabic language.

To achieve the above aims, a readability test of four questions was constructed and validated by asking panel of experts in teaching biology. The reliability of the test was secured using Cronbach Alpha Formula for internal consistency, having the value of (0.77).

The sample of the test consisted of : 1) number of texts chosen from the three units of the biology textbook. 2) 209 students (102 males and 107 females) were selected from three secondary schools in Al-Seeb Walyat sector of the Governorate of Muscat – Sultanate of Oman.

To analyze the data, frequencies, percentages and (Z) value to compare the percentage of males and female students in each level in the readability test were used. In addition, to find out if there is a correlation between student’s performance in the readability test and their achievements in Biology and Arabic Language, Person product moment correlation and determination coefficient were calculated.

The results showed that the level of the readability of the biology textbook was “Independent”, and 56%of the sample have independent level of readability. Moreover, the results revealed the significance difference between male and female students in two levels (Independent and Frustration), but no significance difference between them in Instructional level. Moreover, although there is a significant correlation between students performance in the test and their achievement in Biology and Arabic Language but a very week correlation.

In the light of the above results, couple of recommendation were proposed such as the emphasis of developing the reading abilities of students in science lessons. More research in the area of readability should be conducted to highlight more points related
