Depression and Its relationship with socio-demographic variables among University Lebanese students

Auther : Najwa Al-Yahfofi

The aim of this study is to explore the prevalence of depression among university students. It also investigates the socio-demographic variables associated with depression in the sample. The socio-demographic variables are: religion, sex, socio-economic status, type of university, and the geographical area. The sample consists of 610 second year students of both sexes. The students are chosen from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences from the Lebanese University and American University in Beirut. They belong to various social classes, religions and geographical areas. Their mean age is 21.03 years. Results show no differences in depression between males and females, urban and rural students. However Muslims show more depression than Christians, and the Lebanese University students are more depressed than their American University counterparts. Those from the higher social classes are less depressed than the middle and lower classes. The means of depression among students are found within the middle range according to Beck.
