The Geometry Curriculum in Saudi Arabia Between the Stages of Piaget and the Levels of Van Hiele

Auther : T.S. Al-Harbi

Several theories provide bases for learning and teaching in general; and for learning and teaching mathematics in particular. Two of these theories have radically changed the geometry curriculum around the world: Jean Piagets theory and P. M. Van Hieles theory. This study is done from the perspective of Van Hiele and Piaget, offering a broad framework in which to view cognitive growth in geometry. This study identifies and briefly discusses the two theories to clarify their notions in the learning and teaching of geometry. The unit Bases of Plane Geometry in the geometry curriculum at the seventh grade of the public schools of Saudi Arabia is analyzed to investigate the way of building this unit and its relation to both Piaget theory and Van Hiele theory. Results show that the geometric curriculum in the Saudi schools is not based on the axiomatic geometry approach that was created by Euclid. Moreover, the geometry unit in the seventh grade relates mostly to Van Hiele theory with the consideration that it concentrates on lower levels (the first and second) which contradicts many research results that student at this grade should be at the third level. The study strongly recommends the implication of empirical studies to investigate the implications of the theoretical considerations.
