EFL Teachers Perceived Difficulties in Implementing Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in Kuwait

Auther : Najat A. Al-Mutawa

Attempts to introduce communicative language teaching (CLT) into EFL contexts prompted many innovations in foreign language education. Unfortunately the innovations met with little success, leading to difficulties in the implementation of CLT worldwide. This has not stopped efforts to be exerted in order to introduce CLT in the hope that it will improve ELT.

Teachers’ perceptions of the feasibility of a CLT innovation play a crucial role in determining the success or failure of such innovations. They would provide answers to the following questions: Why has CLT been so difficult to implement in EFL? How appropriate is CLT for EFL contexts?

The aim of the study is to assess EFL school teachers’ understanding of the difficulties of CLT implementation in Kuwait. The study concludes that the overwhelming majority of EFL teachers are generally dissatisfied with CLT implementation in class. However, significant differences were found between Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti teachers on the one hand, and between secondary school teachers and basic-education teachers on the other.

The study has widespread ramifications since many countries share some of the characteristics of ELT in Kuwait.
