The Importance of Applying Identification Procedures for students with Mental Retardation and their Educational Needs

Auther : Abdullah M. Alwabli

This study aims to investigate the extent of importance of applying procedures for identifying students with mental retardation and determining their individual educational needs. A questionnaire was sent to one hundred sixty programs of mental retardation in Saudi Arabia. Only one hundred & nine programs (68%) responded and completed 20 - item questionnaire using likert-type items covering three dimensions of identification procedures (e.g. Referral, eligibility and program development).

The main findings show that the three dimensions, referral, eligibility procedures and procedures regarding program development, have the following high means respectively, 2.76, 2.67, and 2.76. Significant differences are found between grade levels means, in favor of first grade. Thus, the study offers the possible explanation for that difference. Furthermore, recommendations have been suggested to enhance the trend of applying identification procedures in the field of mental retardation in Saudi Arabia or other Arab countries.
