The Effects and Repercussions of the Iranian Nuclear Program on the Arab Gulf States' Security in Light of Varied Gulf Positions toward Iran

Objectives: The study aimed to review the reality of the Iranian nuclear program, in terms of its origin, development and future directions, in addition to examining some of the provisions of international agreements and treaties related to nuclear activities. The study also aimed to explain the reality of Iranian-Gulf relations, and try to develop proposed scenarios towards unifying the Gulf action with regard to the Iranian nuclear file and its implications on the security of the Gulf region countries. Method: The study adopted the historical analytical approach as it dealt with an illustrative account of the developments witnessed in the Arab Gulf region since the beginnings of the Iranian nuclear activities, while the analytical approach covered an analytical presentation of the position of the international community and its institutions towards the Iranian nuclear program, and the international treaties and agreements that sought to control this the program. Results: The results of the study showed a variation in the Arab Gulf states' positions in their relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and implications of this difference in attitudes to reach a unified and strong position towards Iran's nuclear file and its security effects on the countries of the region. The outcomes showed variable scenarios for the Gulf countries to deal with the Iranian nuclear program to reduce its security impacts and repercussions in terms of economic, environmental, strategic and military aspects. The study recommended the necessity of the earnest and unified Gulf countries to strive to build one balanced and compatible strategy dealing with the Iranian side, under the umbrella of the Gulf Cooperation Council. The study also underlined the importance of keeping all options valid for the Arab Gulf states in dealing with Iran. Conclusion: The enhancing factor that contributed to the continuation of Tehran's expansion wheel is attributed to the dispersion of the positions of the Gulf Cooperation Council states and the variation in the positions of its individual countries towards dealing with Iran.
