The Folk Poetry of Oman; Its Aesthetic Structure, Rhetorical Features and the Styles of its Singing; A Study of Three Types of Poetry.

Auther : Dr. Hessa S. Z. Al-Refai

This paper deals with three important types of Omani Folk Poetry namely "Al-Maidan", "Al-Taghroud" and "Al-Razah". The research focuses on explaining the meaning, the aesthetics and rhetorical characteristics, and the symbolic significance of the poetry. Acknowledging that most types of Folk poetry are also performed as songs, the paper is not confined to the study of the poems as texts extrapolated from their context. Therefore performance as a complex whole, is highly emphasized. This means to learn more about rhythmic and musical instruments which accompany the singing session. Besides tracing the singers' movements within the performance and observing all kinds of social interaction, ritual practices and rites that might be carried out during the event. Realizing the common ties between the Omani Folk poetry and its Gulf and Arab counterparts, the research is intended to compare all features that indicate pan-Arab nature. For example, both "Al-Maiden" and "Al-Zuhairi", a form ot the "Mawwal" which is prevalent in Kuwait and the Arab countries,

depend mainly on the pun as a whole mark of the poem. However the first one follows the system of the traditional Arabic Poetry, and the second is strophic poem. Finally the study has

arrived at many conclusions. The most important among them is the impact of the phonetic traits of local dialects, on the content and structure, of Folk poetry in the Sultanate of Oman.
