The Role of Religious Scholars in Influencing Political Decision-Making in Kuwait 1896 – 1939.

Auther : Dr. Abdulrahman M. Alebraheem

This article re-examines the history of the political decision-making process in Kuwait through discussing the role of religious scholars in the political decision-making process between 1896 and 1939. The importance of this category of Kuwait society has been neglected by many historians. Most historians working on Kuwait's modern politics have focussed on two forces: the ruling family and the merchants. Although these two players were undeniably the most influential parties, other segments of society should not be overlooked. This article seeks to prove that the religious scholars in Kuwait had an effective impact on the two main powers, Sheikhs and merchants. The article employs a critical, historical investigation of all information related to the topic through available documents, manuscripts, and books.
