An Evaluation of Sex-Ratio Accuracy Based on Data of Saudi Population Censuses and Demographic Surveys (1974 -2016).

Auther : Prof. Rushood M. AlKhraif - Fatin H. AlMotairi

Due to the importance of demographic data in population studies and projections, this study aims to evaluate the accuracy of Age-Sex data in Saudi Population Censuses and Demographic Surveys during the period (1974-2016) and explore their consistency with the general demographic patterns observed around the world. In order to accomplish this objective, four population censuses and two demographic surveys were utilized to examine sex-ratios at national and administrative levels.  One of the most important conclusions is that the accuracy of Age-Sex data, especially sex-ratio by age, lacks accuracy and conformity with normal demographic patterns. The sex-ratio showed an upward trend, with sharp and unjustified fluctuation from one age group to the next, especially in older age-groups. These fluctuations are inconsistent with demographic patterns around the world . Therefore, the study highly recommends adjusting Age-Sex data before using it in population estimates, projections, or any other purpose.  The study also emphasizes that utmost care should be taken and further correction should be undertaken.  Also, more studies should conducted in order to identify reasons for sex-ratios inaccuracy and fluctuation in different age-groups, especially older ones.
