Architects' Opinions Toward the Architectural Competitions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Auther : Dr. Mosaid A. Al-Sadhan - Arch. Nahar B. Abdulfattah

Architectural Competitions in Saudi Arabia became a key method for finding creative and distinctive architectural designs as well as solutions. This had resulted in a number of buildings and projects that became local and global landmarks. Such Competitions have a significant role in upgrading and encouraging the profession in order to come up with creative ideas. They also have an influential role in discovering new talents and highlighting professional offices.
Despite the importance of architectural competitions, their execution in Saudi Arabia has generated several criticisms by those involved and interested in them. Some have criticized the results of these competitions, others have criticized their prizes and financial return, and finally we have those who believe that the number of architectural competitions in Saudi Arabia is not enough. Therefore, this research seeks to examine these views and criticisms in order to check the positive or negative attitude towards them for the benefit of organizers and owners. It seeks to determine the extent of the participation of practitioners in Saudi Arabia and their involvement in architectural competitions.
A survey was designed to perform the task whose design was the result of number of stages, including literature review, interviewing specialists, pilot survey, and final survey, which was distributed to 258. The largest percentage of participants has never participated in any competition. They attributed the main reason to the limited number of competitions held in Saudi Arabia and the weak coverage in the media. The overall impression about architectural competitions activity in Saudi Arabia was "bad", and when examining points of view in detail, "neutral" was the most common response.
