Motives of Terrorist Behavior: A Case Study of Psychology Faculty Members' Views at Saud Universities.

Auther : Dr. Ibrahim A. Alhusaynan

Many communities suffer greatly from the increasing terrorist behavior, which threatens their security and stability. Terrorism is also considered as an obstacle to growth and prosperity; therefore, understanding terrorist behavior becomes an urgent need. The current study examined the views of faculty members who specialize in psychology at Saudi universities on the motives behind such behavior. A questionnaire was employed to investigate possible motives. After verifying its psychometric characteristics, the questionnaire was administered to a sample of 49 psychology specialists. The results of the study showed general agreement on most causes of terrorist behavior, which involve psychological, educational, family and community issues. However, there were no statistically significant differences of the informants' views in terms of gender and years of experience. The study concludes with a number of proposals and recommendations, which may direct future studies in this area.
