Interculturalism in Contemporary Kuwaiti Theatre: Shakespeare as A Model.

Auther : Dr. Jasem H. Alghaith

Interculturalism has recently become a reality in the Kuwaiti theatrical movement, particularly in Kuwaiti plays inspired by and adapted from the texts of the play wright William Shakespeare (1564-1616) and their worldwide stage adaptations through the ages up to the contemporary theatrical experiences. Kuwaiti dramatists derived this rich material from the ideas, philosophies, characters, dramatic situations, plots, and scenography of Shakespearian dramaand presented it in a contemporary theatrical style that reflected the Arab Gulf reality and the suffering of the modern man; they were influenced by the English Shakespearean theatrical culture along with their Arab Gulf heritage and their interaction with theater experiences and Avant-garde theatrical scenes in which characters across different times, places, and ideologies, enter into struggle and major and secondary plots.
This research aims to study the impact of interculturalism on Kuwaiti plays adapted from Shakespearian drama and to identify the nature of the Arab Gulf versions of theatrical forms of arts and their dramatic structures through out the works of two Kuwaiti dramatists: Sulaiman Al-Bassam and Abdullah Al-Turkumani .
