Gender and Patterns of Undesirable Occupations for Women: A Field Study on A Sample of Omani Society Members.

Auther : Prof. Mounir A. Karadisha - Dr. Naser R. Almoawali - Safiya M. Almemari

This study aims to uncover the most undesirable occupations for women according to the vision of Omani society members of different backgrounds and characteristics. It also aims to reveal the most undesirable types of occupations according to gender differences, identifying the main reasons and explaining the social, economic and cultural reasons behind this. The study was mainly based on a questionnaire as a data collection tool, which was applied to a random stratified multi-staged sample of (3150) male and female respondents representing the Omani society in its three regions (northern, middle and southern)
The study results showed that the rooting of the cultural legacies in the value fabric of the Omani society, which is a conservative traditional society, plays an important role in confining women to their traditional roles in the home. Women seem to be more receptive to the idea of concentrating their roles within the matrimonial institution and practicing their traditional roles. Such concepts seem to have increased men's control of the social and economic conditions of women's lives and prevented them from having real alternatives that enable them to control their various choices, including patterns of professions that are not favored by women.
