The current study aimed to identify the degree of awareness of women's Islamic legal rights related to engagement, marriage contract, marital life, divorce and repudiation, alimony, and its relationship to some demographic variables, namely nationality, age, marital status, number of children and the residential area of the participants.
The sample consisted of 1112 female college students registered during the academic year 2012 / 2013 representing 14 scientific faculties at Kuwait University. To achieve the objective of the study, an instrument consisting of 5 sub-scales was designed to measure the degree of awareness of the sample members of their legitimate rights. The Statistical Package for the social Sciences (SPSS) was implemented to analyse the collected data. The findings indicated that the sample enjoyed a high degree of awareness of their legitimate rights in all dimensions of the study. The study also found no statistical differences between the respondents which may be attributed to the study variables, except for the age variable, where statistical differences were found between age groups in favor of the age category (42-49).
In the light of the present findings of the study, a set of recommendations was formulated, the most salient of which was the emphasis on furthering the educational and cultural level of women for increasing their awareness of their Islamic legitimate rights.
