Auther : Dr. Badriya S. AL-Malki - Prof. Aisha A. Fakhro
This study evaluates national standardized tests for grades 4-6 to measure the tests' alignment to the Qatar national curriculum standards in the four major subjects: Arabic, English, mathematics and science. For the purposes of this study, a rubric was developed which includes four domains: test instructions, alignment of test language to the language used in the curriculum standards, language and organization. The sample included 12 tests in the four major subjects that were administered to grades 4-6 studentds in 2011-12/2012-13. The results indicated that the science and mathematics tests did not meet the criteria of accurate test instructions. There were issues with the instructions about the test duration, the points allotted to each item, and the adequacy between the number of test items and the time alotted to the test in the four subjects at all grade levels. In addition, there were issues in some tests related to (a) alignment of the test language to the language used in the curriculum standards and (b) organization. All the tests analyzed met the criterion language satisfactorily. The authors' recommendations based on these findings could contribute to improving the quality of national tests in primary schools.
