Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kuwaiti - Iraqi Crisis in 1961 (A Historical Study) .

Auther : Dr. Hamad M. AL-Qhtany

Through this study it is clear that many different steps and procedures helped Kuwait to get independence and to get rid of the 1899 treaty with the British. On 19 June 1961, Kuwait became fully independent. After Kuwaiti independence in 1961, another serious crisis evolved, as on 25 June, 1961 the Iraqi President, Abd Al-Karim Qasim, threatened to occupy and annex Kuwait, and this threat expanded other countries especially Saudi Arabia who spared no military and diplomatic efforts to stop the Iraqi threat to Kuwait and to ensure the independence of Kuwait.
Saudi Arabia translated its support to Kuwait, both politically and diplomatically, Diplomatically, Saudi Arabia intensified its role inside the Arab League to make Kuwait a member in the Arab Leagues and moved with some Arab countries that support Kuwait to achieve this purpose which was achieved on 20 July, 1961.
On the Military side, Saudi Arabia announced emergency and sent armed ground forces immediately to protect Kuwait against the Iraqi threat. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia asked the Arab League to prepare an Arab Armed Force to stop the Iraqi threat to Kuwait. Indeed, a resolution by the Council of the Arab League had been issued to from Arab Joint Forces to take the place of the British forces. Through this, Saudi Arabia succeeded to make the problem between Iraq and the Arab League not lone with Kuwait Only.
This reflects the effective military and diplomatic role of the Saudi Arabia in the Arab League resolutions that induced the Arab League making Emergency Arab Armed Force to prevent the Iraqi threats to Kuwait. Moreover, it reflects the strong brotherhood relations with Kuwait that was represented during the tyrant Iraqi invasion to Kuwait in 1990, in which Saudi Arabia played a very important role to liberate Kuwait. As if the history was repeating itself through the similar situations between 1961 and 1990, It is history, a lesson and a consideration.
