Youths' Use of Mass Media in the Gulf Cooperation Council .
Auther : Dr. Yousef M. AL-Failakawi
Economic development in the GCC has ushered in unprecedented growth in the diffusion and adoption of electronic media of communication. Although these media devices are geared essentially towards adults, youths are major users of such devices. This study aims at exploring how youths in GCC use new media devices, such as television, online access, and movie theaters. In order to answer these questions, a cluster sample of 300 youths from three GCC countries (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain) from middle and high schools were interviewed.
The study revealed that there were several differences between these three countries in how their children are using mass media. The study found that the GCC youths are spending about three hours using online media, they have TV sets in their bedrooms with no knowledge of their parents of what they are watching, and they go at least once a week to the movie theaters - except in Saudi Arabia where there are no movie theaters. Regarding print media, they rarely use them because it does not attract them.
