Sheikh Abdullah AL-Salem's Attitude Towards the Nationalistic Movement in Kuwait During the 1961 Crisis .

Auther : Prof. Abdullah M. AL-Hajeri

This study addresses the attitude of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem (1950-1965) towards the Kuwaiti nationalistic trends both prior to the 1961 crisis and after. This study also analyzes how this crisis and Abdulnasser's  attitude towards it affected the change in the regard of Kuwait's then ruler towards these nationalistic trends, statring with doubt and obsession, and ending with assistance and support after the end of the crisis. The study presented the development of the authority's position, represented by Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem via numerous categories. The first addresses the history of the nationalistic movement in Kuwait and the authority's stand against it by suppression and exclusion.
The second category discusses the 1961 crisis and how the stand of the United Arab Republic, lead by Adbulnasser, contributed to the reassurance of Shiekh Abdullah Al-Salem of the trends of the nationalistic movements, allowing the authority in Kuwait to become more understanding of all sociopolitical movements, the forefront of which being the nationalistic movement. The importance of this study can be concluded in its attempt to analytically disclose this new change in internal and external Kuwaiti political trends, particularly after appointing a Nasserist magnate as head of external affairs, as well as appointing a number of ambassadors, and intiting some of those who are part of these trends for political participation, so that they became close to the decision-making and governing circles. Despite Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem's previous knowledge of their political orientation of the Arabic nationalism prior to the crisis of 1961 was a cause for the fear and worry of Kuwait's then ruler.
