Impact of Mosque on Cities Formation and on Assessing Concentric Circle Growth .

Auther : Prof. Waleed A. AL-Meneis

The aim of this study is to investigate and analyze the impact of Mosque on the formation of Islamic city structure and in establishing its gradual circular growth around the main Mosque. Islamic cities used to be establish around the main Mosque throughout Islamic urban history starting with Al Haram Mosque in Makah and Al Medina Mosque in Medina and followed by other cities all over Islamic cities through history, The concentric or circle growth of Islamic cities was seen in Islamic cities which were originally established as a result of the ritual of (tawaf) around Al-Kaaba, in addition of maintaining five prayers daily beside Jum'a prayers. Muslim scholars were the pioneers in this context, they discussed city plans in many ways i.e. assessing preconditions of establishing cities, building city structure, land-use, and total urban plan. The first efforts on city circle plan was seen clearly on literature of scholars like city plan of Baghdad i.e. Dar assalm the truthfully completed circular plan, and also Ibn abi Al rabi and who discussed those conditions in establishing cities at the Abbasid reign.
