Kuwaiti Proverbs : Structural and Applied Study .

Auther : Dr. Hessa S. Z. AL-Rifai

Studies of proverbs, whether in Kuwait or in the Arab World, are generally restricted to collection, classification and indexing. Therefore the importance of this research stems from being an initiative step in applying the structural theory to the analysis of Kuwaiti proverbs. The paper begins with general definition of proverbs with particular emphasis on their structural values as a literary genre of Folklore. This is followed by reviewing the most recent structural studies of proverbs in Folkleor scholarship. The study afterward deals with the aesthetic structure of the proverb, its components, and the analogy and opposition in the proverbs. Besides indicating linguistic phenomena such as, Binary Opposition, Complementary Distribution, Metaphor, and Constancy and Variation in proverbs. In sum, proverbs are linguistic phenomenon which reflects and intrinsic features of language, despite their briefness in form. Therefore they represent a valuable test case for the structural analysis of Folklore in general.
