The Relationship between Depression and Self - Efficacy in a Sample of Kuwaiti Children and Adolescent.

Auther : Shaima’a W. AL-Jawhari - Prof. Ahmed M. Abdel-Akhalek

This study aimed to examine the relationship between depression and self - efficacy in a sample (N= 1523) of Kuwaiti children and adolescents recruited from governmental schools in Kuwait. Their ages ranged between 10 and 16 years. They responded to the Multidimensional Child and Adolescent Depression Scale and the Self - efficacy Questionnaire. There were significant negative correlations between depression and self - efficacy in all the samples. Stepwise regression revealed that all subscales of self - efficacy (academic, emotional, and social) can negatively predict depression, and the academic self - efficacy was the strongest predictor. There were no significant sex - related differences in the total self - efficacy score.
