Investigating Omani Twelfth Grade Students' Understanding of Scientists' Works Guiding Principles .

Auther : Dr. Abdullah Ben K. Ambusaidi - Fatma Bent M. AL-Muqeemi - Maya Bent S. AL-Salmi

The aim of this study is to investigate Omani twelfth grade students' level of understanding of principles that guide scientists' works and to find out if there is a difference in this understanding due to students' gender. The sample of the study consisted of 943 twelfth grade male and female students chosen randomly from four Educational Governorates in the Sultanate of Oman. To achieve the study's objectives, the researchers constructed a test based on multiple choice questions (MCQs) related to the principles that guided scientists' works consisting of 20 items covering five main principles: honesty, social responsibilities, caution, legal and scientists' appreciation. Both validity and reliability of the MCQ test were checked and calculated. The reliability was computed by Pearson Correlation which gave the value of (0.75). The results of the study showed that the students' level of understanding of the principles guided scientists' works was overall weak. Furthermore, there was statistical significant difference between male and female students in their understanding to the two domains social responsibilities and scientists' appreciation, and in the test as whole in favor to female students.  In the light of the above results, some recommendations and suggestions were proposed.
