Violence Among Female Students in State Secondary Schools of Kuwait: A Field Study

Auther : Dr. Ghannam A. Al-Ghannam - Dr. Meznah S. Al-Azmi

The study aimed at exploring the most important factors that lead to the spread of violence among female students in secondary schools in the State of Kuwait and at identifying the means that could be implemented to curb and prevent violence from the perspective of students themselves. To achieve this end, a two-measurement questionnaire was developed. The first sought to identify the factors that caused violence and it consisted of 38 items distributed into four factors as follows: Family, school, personal and media related factors. The second measurement was related to preventing this phenomenon and it comprised 12 items. A random sample of 946 students completed the questionnaire. The study revealed that, unexpectedly, that the school factors were responsible for the spread of violence more than any other factor followed by personal, media-related and family factors respectively.  The results also showed that there were statistically significant differences between mean averages for personal factors that could be attributed to school grade. In this regard, the differences were in favor of the 11th graders. Also there were statistically significant differences between mean averages attributed to educational area variable for all factors. The study recommendes that the school factors should be more carefully investigated and accounted for as they contributed in increasing violence at schools.
