The Future of the City in the Arabian Gulf: Dilemma of Post Oil Peak

Auther : Prof. Mashary Bin A. Al-Naim

Presently, most of the Gulf cities face real challenges, mainly because of the uncontrollable urban expansion.  The physical sprawl of the cities in the region was accompanied by an active real-estate activities aimed to sell mega projects to foreigners and increase the population without realizing the hidden problems of this action.  The purpose of those activities was to make the cities in the region look similar to global cities specially New York, Hong Kong, Singapore.  Huge real-estate companies were established in the past ten years to take the lead to re-build the Gulf cities in a way to consider those cities ascommercial projectsrather than a place to live in.  This study aims to analyze this phenomena and understand how those cities will survive in the future, especially after the recent global financial crisis.  The study will tackle five main planning issues including: Environmental, Political, Socio-cultural, Technical and Economic.  The conclusion of the study stressed on the concept ofinstant citieswhich describe the situation in the Gulf cities.  This means that those cities have no deep roots in the local environment at all levels.
