The Geomorphology of Al-Dhana Mountain Area and its Suburbs in the Western Coastal Plains of UAE: A Field Study

Auther : Prof. Hasan S. Abu Al-Enien

This is a field geomorphological study of Al-Dhana Mountain (about 100 meters) and its suburbs in the western coastal plains of the UAE. The study presents maps obtained from fieldwork conducted by the author. The study area consists of two parts: the northern part, which is mainly covered by Pleistocene superficial deposits (except Al-Dhana Mountain being formed of Hormes Cambrian Formation) and the southern part, which is mainly formed of successive beds of Miocene limestones. The geomorphology of the northern part gives rise to depositional features, whereas that of the southern part causes the development of erosional features. The study pays special attention to defining, locating and mapping marine erosion surface remnants which have developed on different bed-rocks. These remnants are classified into different groups based on changes of sea levels during the Pleistocene. An attempt is also made to correlate this geomorphological evidence with the archaeological findings in the Mediterranean Basin.
