Livelihood and Educational Needs of Kuwaiti Minors under Custody of the State of Kuwait

Auther : Dr. Fahad Y. Al Fadalah

The study aims to monitor and assess the daily and educational needs of Kuwaiti minors under the custody of the Public authority for Minors Affairs (PAMA) as perceived by their mothers. The sample included 240 mothers who provided care for their minor children following the demise of their husbands. A specially designed survey covering 6 aspects of single parent families (including educational and familial responsibilities, social and financial pressures, problems facing minors, guidance for mothers, mothers perceptions of their childrens needs, and the role of PAMA) was employed. The obtained data was processed using SPSS. The results reveal key indicators involving a diversity of familial and educational burdens shouldered by the mothers, including the duplicity of their role, the tremendous physical effort they had to exert in raising the children and controlling their behavior, and the management of various familial mishaps. These burdens cause both financial as well as social problems. In addition, while the financial and administrative role of PAMA is viewed positively by the mothers, the educational and the instructive role of PAMA is assessed negatively by most mothers.
