Sustainable Environmental Development of Forest Area in South-western Saudi Arabia

Auther : Dr. Hamad M. H. Alsheikh

Economic development in Saudi Arabia has resulted in many social, demographic and environmental changes in the population including the villagers of the forest area in South-western Saudi Arabia. The study shows an increasing interest in and awareness of the importance of the preservation of forests on the part of villagers, viz. 91% of them believe that random cutting of trees leads to the destruction of environment. This is accompanied by a decreasing dependence of these villagers on forests as grazing areas for their flocks (only 32% of the subjects used forests for this purpose) and as a resource for timber (only 16% used them for this purpose) as a result of the availability of other alternatives including electricity and animal feed. By contrast, 92% of the subjects use forests for picnicking and camping. The study provides a number of recommendations that may contribute to the preservation of environment and the enhancement of human development in the forest areas.
