Science and Mathematics Teachers Application of Meaningful Learning Strategies in Public and Special Needs Primary Schools in Kuwait: A Comparative Study

Auther : Dr. Fauzi A. Al-Doukhi -Dr. Yaqoub Y. Al-Shatti

The study aims to identify the extent of science and mathematics teachers application of meaningful learning strategies in Kuwaiti public and special needs primary schools, in order to see whether this is influenced by school type (public vs. special needs schools), subject (science vs. mathematics), or a teachers experience. The study sample consisted of 116 teachers: 68 public vs. 48 special needs school teachers and 67 mathematics vs. 49 science teachers. A questionnaire was administered to measure factors involving the application of meaning learning strategies, which include: linking the subject to the learners life, the use of instructional strategies, the teachers motives, and the enrichment of the classrooms educational environment. The results showed that science and mathematics in both public and special needs schools had a poor application of meaningful learning strategies. However, the science teachers were better than their mathematics counterparts in the application of some meaningful strategies. Generally, the application of meaningful learning strategies in public schools was different from that in special needs schools.
