Community Antecedents in Support of Tourism: Empirical Study in UAE Using Structural Equations Modeling

Auther : Prof. Massod A. Badri - Dr. Samaa T. M. Attia

This study attempts to develop an overall model of tourism for the United Arab Emirates. The model is based on previous theories and studies related to determinants of support for tourism and its programs. The study provides several hypotheses that are tested using structural equations modeling. The model consists of 9 dimensions influencing directly or indirectly the level of support the community gives to development of tourism infrastructure. The 9 dimensions are: community concerns, economic values, utilization of tourism resource base, community attachment, state of local economy, economic benefits, social benefits, and cultural benefits. The questionnaire designed for the purpose of this study was distributed to 4097 residents. The  structural model contained 34 paths in which each was tested with a hypothesis. Several psychometric tests were performed to test the validity and reliability of the model. The final model contained 18 paths. In addition, 3 paths were added to reveal the nature of interaction between the dimensions that were related to benefits and costs. The results show direct effects of most of the paths on the ultimate dependent variable support for tourism. Direct effects were observed with regard to economic values, utilization of tourism resource base, community attachment, state of local economy, social benefits, social costs, cultural costs and cultural benefits. The study provides a number of recommendations for decision makers based on the results. The results also show several interacting relationships among the dimensions. Finally the study presents a statistical summary of the level of each of the variables in the model.
