Kuwaiti Parliamentary Elections of 2006 : A Content Analysis of Candidates’ Manifestos

Auther : Dr. Abdullah M. Al-Enezi - Dr. Ibrahim N. Al-Hadban - Prof. Mazen K. Garaibeh

This study examines the content of the candidates’ manifestos in the parliamentary elections of 2006. The sample consisted of 64% of all manifestos (158 out of 249), including male and female candidates from urban and suburban areas, as well as Shi’at and Sunni sects. The main themes raised in the manifestos are grouped under three main parameters: political, economic and financial, and societal. Firstly, the results showed that the issues of reform, political equality and political participation of women took lead in the political parameter. Secondly, they revealed that the preservation of financial surplus and oil wealth, in addition to calling for salary increase, were the focus of the economic dimension. Thirdly, the results brought the improvement of education and health services to the fore in the societal parameter. In addition, the study points to some statistically significant differences between various study variables and the candidates’ manifestos in the said elections.
