Policemens Opinion about the Importance of Health and Physical Fitness

Auther : Dr. Heyam Mohammed - Dr. Raja Tayeh

The aime of study is to explore the beliefs and knowledge regarding physical fitness and physical activity, self-perceived physical ability and health status among policeman. The survey was distributed in February 2005 on a randomly selected 1000 sample population policemen from different places in the Ministry of Interior branches in The State of Kuwait, where (707) questionnaires were returned.

All participants were males (100%), as the ministry allowed only males to be Cops. The majority (48.3%) of participants were between the age of 20 and 45 years old. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated and showed that 41% were overweight and 26.7% were obese.

Health status was asked and answered from there point of view. It was indicated that one hundred fifteen (16.3%) complain from having diabetes, high level of cholesterol and blood pressure.

Poor qualification regarding their abilities would raise questions and concerns about the possible existence of serious complications for health-related diseases and their job achievement. Overweight has reached epidemic proportion, where it is needed for them to be fit to reach the qualification of their duty. A national campaign should be introduced to policemen regarding health relation to their job and the importance of physical fitness and nutritional habits.
