Auther : Dr. Asma A. Abahussain - Dr. Eman A. Abahussain

Household Pharmaceutical wastes put our health and environment at risk. The procedures made to get rid of some treat part of this problem. The integral environmental evaluation for household pharmaceutical wastes sheds light over the problem and its future directions based on recent data and indexes and by using the DPSEEA module. It also sought the optimal method to put an end to these wastes through consultation and participation, where the opinions of the concerned community were studied , and consequently, contributing in putting an end to the health, economical, social and environmental effects of this problem in addition to promoting social awareness means regarding the risks of such wastes on the health, economy and environment. The study showed that 76.5% of the sample dispose the extra drugs by throwing them away with the house garbage. 11.2% dispose the drugs by throwing them in the sewage drains in the house while 8.5% do so by giving them to a friend .By sorting out the household pharmaceutical wastes, it appeared that they contained antibiotics. This indicates that there is little awareness of the importance of following the right treatment regarding antibiotics and the necessity of having the instructions of a certain drug even if it was for free. The problems resulting from the household pharmaceutical wastes in Kuwait were analyzed, and the indexes, reasons and effects were stated. The study resulted in a matrix for the policies suggested to put an end to the household pharmaceutical wastes in Kuwait. It included legislations or laws to control drug discharge in the governmental sector and the Private sectors as well as a mechanism to gather household pharmaceutical wastes and safely dispose of same and another mechanism to draw the social awareness to the danger thereof. Each policy was analyzed, and the considerations, economical instruments, projects and programs for the realization thereof were stated. The study recommended to carry out periodical campaigns to gather all household pharmaceutical wastes in specific centers such as the health clinics, and then, to conduct researches by pharmacists after sorting out these wastes, all in view of identifying their quality, estimating their costs, detecting the source of their existence, and then, safely disposing of them.
