Recreational Preference of the Old Age People in the Saudi Society

     The study depends on the social survey method and is applied on a sample of 237 old men from the Saudi society. The objective of the study is to identify the trends of old men towards recreation, and the social reflections when practicing the recreational activities as they see, identifying the social, economic and family characteristics of the practitioners of recreation activity, in addition to identifying the recreation activities preferred by old people. It also identifies the agencies that are responsible for providing the recreation activities for them. The study aims also at identifying the existence of the relationship among some variables (educational level, previous employment, social status, place of birth, and income) and the recreational preference. The study sheds light on the social, economic and family characteristics of the recreational activity, old practitioners, as for age from 60 years to below 65 years, and holders of university degrees and higher, the married, pensioness, healthy, with medium economic status.

     The study indicates that more than half the sample agreed to the positive recreation. The recreation activities preferred by the old people were ordered as follows: friendly gatherings, experience presentations, project inauguration, sports activities, practicing previous hobbies, travel and tourism, watching media, writing diaries, participating in charity works, voyages and visits, breeding animals, and reading activity. The agencies responsible for providing recreational activities to them are the Ministry of Interior, pension organizations, municipalities, chambers of commerce and industry, Ministry of Social Affairs, previous employers, specialized charity associations, and youth welfare presidency. The study indicates a variety of social benefits on the old people when practicing the recreational activity, whether personal, family or social benefits.

     At the end of the study, some recommendations are provided for activating the recreational activities of old people in the Saudi society, and the important role they play during the rest of their lives.
