The Role of Diwaniayah in The Elderlys Health in Kuwait

Auther : Dr. Yagoub Y. Al-Kandari

Diwaniayah is a term applied in Kuwait to a popular and culturally well-rooted phenomenon, an informally structured and semi - regular gathering of the elderly.  It plays an important role in the life of the Kuwaitis in general, and the life of the elderly (aged) in particular. The present study aims at investigating the relationship between visiting or attending the Diwaniayah, and somatic symptoms and general health in a selected sample of Kuwaiti male elderly (aged males) (N= 244, aged between 60 and 98 years), by using self - health reports and Somatic Symptoms Inventory (SSI). Results show significant differences in somatic symptoms between Diwaniayahs visitors and non-visitors, and between married and non-married subjects. Diwaniayahs visitors and married subjects were significantly lower in somatic symptoms compared with Diwaniayahs non-visitors and single or divorced or widower subjects. A positive relationship between age and the importance of the Diwaniayah as perceived by subjects has been found.  In addition, a positive relationship has been found between the frequency of visiting the Diwaniayah and each of the following variables: social network, the strength of the relationship with friends, and somatic symptoms. Multiple regression reveals, that work, economic status, and the frequency of visiting the Diwaniayah could work as predictable variables for somatic symptoms.
