Assessment of Utilization of Groundwater for Al-Rawda Mosques - Kuwait

Auther : Dr. Khaled M. AL-Barak- Prof. Fawzia M. AL-Ruwaih-Mohamed AL-Senafy

This study aims at utilizing the groundwater of the upper Kuwait Group aquifer in Al-Rawda suburb to irrigate the vegetation used for greening the open spaces in four selected mosques, namely: Hamada Mosque, Al-Duaij Mosque, Mulla Marshad Mosque and Ibn Al-Qyyem Al-Jawziyah Mosque .  It is expected that approximatlely 70 m3/d of groundwater can be produced for this purpose from all of the above mosques through drilling for production wells in them. The groundwater of the upper Kuwait Group aquifer in Al-Rawda was assessed through determining the hydraulic properties of the aquifer system, in addition to evaluating the qualitative nature of the groundwater in anticipation of using it to irrigate the vegetation, and possibly to utilize it for other purposes such as washing and toilet flushing

Results of pumping and recovery tests indicate relatively high transmissivity values of the aquifer system, ranging between 100 and 300 m3/day, which implies that sufficient quantities of groundwater can be produced from the investigation sites.

Chemical analysis results have also shown that the total dissolved solids of the groundwater in the study area range between 4178 and 6889 mg/l.

the study recommended that salt tolerant plants should be planted. Finally, the study recommended that the produced groundwater should be utilized in flushing the toilets of the investigated mosques. This process is expected to save approximately 2800 m3 of the fresh water that is presently used in each of the above mosques for flushing purposes.
