The Geographical Features of Industry in the United Arab Emirates: An Analytical Study in Economic Geography

Auther : Dr. Ahmed M. M. Khaleel

Industry is considered among the most important economic sectors in the UAE. It occupies central position in the diversity of the national income sources, and its independence from the traditional income source; oil.

The discovery of oil in 1962 has ushered in the age of modern industry.  With the federal union among the seven Emirates states in 1972, both the federal and local governments have given importance to industry.  Oil revenues have stressed the importance of industrial development bases as one of the major factors in the building up of the state production base.

This paper is aimed at spotlighting the geographical features of industry in the UAE through a study of the following points: the growth and development of industry particularly in the last decade of the 20thc, the geographical distribution of industry and the factors of its dissemination and centralization, highlighting some geographical features of industry in the state like Location Quotient, industrial magnitude, industrial specialization and industrial diversification on the one hand, and the importance of industry and its centrality to the local income, on the other.  Reference is also made to the state free zones and their role in industrial development.

The paper concludes with presentation of the important results and recommendations reached.
