Zaid Al-Harb and Touching the Nations Strings

Auther : Dr. Hessa S. Z. Al-Rifai

This paper deals with Zaid Al-Harb, one of the most well known Kuwaiti Folk poets (1887-1972). Before the exploration of oil in the mid fourties, Al-Hareb, like his fellow citizens, was a seafarer. He participated in the pearl diving trips and as also a captain of a trading ship. The marines life provided the poet with a rich source of knowledge and experiences, not to mention the chance to learn about the other nations cultures.

Moreover, Al-Harb, in spite of his illiteracy, had gained a wide background of his national history and tradition from which he drew his morals and idealsitic models, and used them to support his call to reform the society. Therefore, this research, carefully discusses the content, subjects and structural nature of his poems.

Eventhough Al-Harb triggers many themes, he mainly concentrates upon political and social crises that face his country and the pan-Arab society. Not only that, but he often suggests the right solution for these problems.

The structure of Al-Harbs poems take two forms, the traditional Arabic poem form and the strophic form; common to Folk poetry.

Like other kinds of folk poetry, Al-Harbs poetry agrees with the Arabic prosody. However, it shows some kind of irregularity which is peculiar to the nature of the colloquial poetry.

In conclusion, Al-Harbs poetic legacy echos the peoples hopes to achieve freedom, dignity and social justice. These distinctive features truly made him one of the most authentic Folk poets in the modern Arab World.
