Determining the Levels of Human Biometerological Comfort in Saudi Arabia Regions

Auther : Dr. Fahad M. Alkolibi

Human Biometerological Comfort is a very significant aspect affecting man activities and, consequently, affecting the quantity and the quality of his production. Hence, the level of the Biometerological comfort for man is important to determine the time and the location of his activities. Taking into consideration these  facts, comes this study as an attempt to determine the levels of climatological comfort in the regions of Saudi Arabia in each month. This will assist the decision maker to determine the proper activities in each region in each month, which will allow reducing the negative impact of the activities on human health, and to obtain the best economical outcome from these activities.

To achieve the goals of this study, the Temperature Humidity Index (THI) was employed to determine the monthly levels of the human Biometerological comfort in each region of Saudi Arabia. The THI values were calculated using daily maximum and minimum temperatures for each one of the studied stations. This is to have THI values for daytime as well as night-time. To illustrate the results of this study, many Biometerological comfort maps were drawn to represents the level of human climatological comfort in the regions of Saudi Arabia in each month at day and night. In addition, many computer programs and statistical packages were employed to design the maps and analyse the data of this study.

The study revealed that except for southwestern mountain region and the northern region, Saudi Arabia climatologically is uncomfortably hot at the daytime in the period extending from March to November. In this period of time, the southwestern mountain region and the northern region are between comfortably to semi comfortably hot. With respect to winter months, the climate is comfortably to semi comfortably cold in most of the regions except the western sloops and the southwest coasts, which are uncomfortably hot to semi comfortably hot.

At night, most of the country is uncomfortably cold in the period extending from December to March except the western sloops and the southwestern region that are comfortable. In the tow months of spring, April and May, and the tow months of fall, September and October, most of the country has a comfortable climate except the western sloops and the southwestern coastal region, which are uncomfortably hot. At summer nights, most of the country is between comfortably to semi comfortably hot except the western sloops and the southwestern coastal region, which are uncomfortably hot, especially in July and August.
