Oral Poeticness in Abdullah Husein’s Pan-Arab Poems

Auther : Su’ad Abd-Al-Wahhab

Oral poeticness emerges as an arresting feature of the Kuwaiti poet Abdullah Husein’s verse, rendering it a stylistic phenomenon that is motivated both practically and aesthetically.  The present study is an attempt to examine aspects of this special type of poeticness.  Its lexicon constitutes an essential ingredient and a tool at the same time.  It shows, by examining and analyzing a number of poems that his poetic discourse has two important bases.  The first relates to the poet’s preference for Classical Arabic verse and his rejection of modernist forms of art in a framework of personal taste for a directness, which even seems to reach oratorical or rhetorical excess.  The second relates to the poet’s confining himself within the limits of Classical Arabic poeticness, hence our use of the term “Oral” in this context.  Among the most noticeable aspects of oralness in his verse are certain standard features of oration, formal, semantic and patterned repetition, and the prominence of melody sound effects at the expense of interpretative parameters.
