Level of Road Accident Dangers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Compared with Some Countries

Auther : Amer N. Al-Mutair

This study explored the geographical distribution of road traffic accidents in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia aiming at portraying the problem in involved and determining its variations and similarities with regards to area distribution.

The study has also evaluated the road accident dangers and compared them with road traffic safety status in other developed countries in order to realize the volume and severity of road traffic dangers on Saudi Arabian roads.  In this regard, a number of internationally recommended significant statistical criteria were used in evaluating road traffic accident dangers.

The study revealed that road traffic accident indicators in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia are extremely high compared with the similar indicators in countries such as the United Kingdom, the European Union, Canada, the United States of America and other advanced countries with remarkable rod traffic safety status.

In spite of the fact that road traffic statistics in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia does not include people who die in hospitals a few days after the occurrence of accidents as practiced by many by many other industrialized countries, the study detected that only 54.7 % of the actual figures of the numbers of deaths caused by road accidents are recorded in the official statistics.

The study proposed a number of recommendations aiming at minimizing road accident dangers.  These include the adoption of a strategic target that would decrease the number of deaths and injuries caused by road accidents by the year 1430 H.  to half of the worst average deaths and injuries records realized over a five year period in the Kingdom’s road accident history as done by some advanced countries in road traffic safety.
