The Role of the Hidden Curriculum in Schooling: An Introspective Study Into Kuwaiti High Schools

Auther : Nawal M.A.R. Al-Osman

This paper is an attempt to shed more light on the concept of the hidden curriculum and its role in Kuwait’s schooling systems.  The paper outlines different perceptions of the term ‘curriculum’ in formal schooling, and the implicit role of what came to be known as a para-curriculum or the hidden curriculum inherent in the school’s value system, para-learning and informal learning. The research, based on an extensive review of what is available about the topic in the literature, devised four-feature areas of the hidden curriculum: tracking, motivation, gender role and selection, organization and evaluation of curriculum contents.  At the theoretical level, the researcher outlined research studies that tackled the negative effects of the hidden curriculum, the reciprocal relationship between the hidden curriculum and the explicit curriculum and the belief systems pertinent to schooling and influential in orienting the hidden curriculum of schools.  A questionnaire study, simple and informal as it is, was conducted to glean some insights from formal schooling, which is influenced by the hidden curriculum.  The questionnaire is made up of four areas, 10-items each for collecting information about how the hidden curriculum affects formal schooling.  Gender role, selection of curricular content and assessment procedure, motivation and student tracking are all influential factors in influencing formal schooling.
