THE ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY OF SIZE AND GEOGRAPHICAL DIVERSIFICATION: THE CASE OF THE COMMERCIAL BANKING INDUSTRY IN THE STATE OF KUWAIT

Auther : Abdullah M. Al-Obaidan

The last decade witnessed the introduction of several schemes aimed at reducing trade barriers and strengthening international financial integration.  Those schemes include formation of the World Trade Organization, enhancing existing economic blocs (i.e. European Union), formation of new trade zones (i.e. North America Free Trade Zone) and enhancing international financial integration through reductions of restrictions on capital movements by many countries.  Those changes were facilitated by the advancement in information technology and the introduction of new financial services.  This progress culminated in the unabated march towards globalization that in turn participated in augmenting the movements toward the formation highly efficient and relatively large multi-service and multinational banks.  This empirical study investigates the benefits of encouraging national commercial banks in the State of Kuwait to enlarge their size through the formation of strategic local/regional/international alliances.
