THE IRANIAN OCCUPATION OF THE THREE EMIRATE’S ISLANDS AND THE ARAB AND INTERNATIONAL REACTIONS

Auther : By Dr. Abdul Qader Bin Homoud Al-Qahtani

Iran has tried to occupy the three Emirates Islands (Abu Musa, Tonb Al-Suqura and Tonb Al-Kobra), in the 19th century, but the British existence in the area impeded it.  After Britain evacuated from the region and the UAE became an independent country in the year 1971, the Iranian army occupied the three islands on 30 November 1971, challenging by that the local, Arab and international public opinion, which condemned the act and called upon Iran to withdraw immediately from the Emirates Islands.  The problem of the occupied islands still exists between UAE and Iran until today.

We have discussed in this study the following points:

1.    The historical background of the islands.

2.    The British withdraw declaration from the Arab Gulf in 1968.

3.    The British withdraw and the Iranian occupation of the islands in 1971.

4.   The political motivation for the Iranian occupation of the islands.

5.   The local and Arabian stand on the Iranian occupation of the islands.

6.   The League of the Arab National stand on the Iranian occupation of the islands.

7.   The Security Council and the islands issue.

8.   The British American stand on the Iranian occupation of the islands.

The relations between the GCC states and Iran after the fall of the Shah regime.
