REBELLION OF A GULF WOMAN: A CRITICAL READING IN THE POETRYOF SAUD AL-SABAH

Auther : By: Prof. Abdallah Al-Mahanna

Suad Al-Sabah is considered one of the most outstanding poetic voices in the track of feminist contemporary Arabic poetry, both in the gulf region and the Arab world as a whole.  This voice managed within three decades to establish its existence and draw significant attention by continuous poetic publications.  However, this poetic voice emerged to say something that had not yet been said before by a woman in the gulf, at a time when women had increased their angry feelings of injustice and oppression by men who believe traditionally that women should confine themselves to a family life and house activities.

The poetess rejected such notions and went on attacking in harsh ragged language the tribal traditions, customs and social rules which contradict the spirit of the age and prevent women from having influential roles in society and life in general.  Nevertheless, much of the poetess’s resentment and bitter criticism have been addressed mainly to man himself, on account of his belief that a woman is no more than a sexual object, ignoring totally her mentality and the special needs of her mind as a woman.

This study however, aims to highlight components of the poetic discourse and its technical devices in dealing with various issues in her poetry, with special reference to the way in which the poetess presents the image of a woman who rebels against the traditional way of society in dealing with women.
