EFFECTIVE RAINFALL AND IRRIGATION WATER REQUIREMENT FOR WHEAT IN ASSIR MOUNTAINS, SAUDI ARABIA

Dry farming of wheat is the main agricultural activity in Assir Mountains. This area has the highest amount of rainfall in the country, by the average productivity of wheat in Assir mountains is very low (1720 kg/ha), this is mainly due to rainfall variability.

The aim of this study is to determine:

      1. Potential evapo-transpiration.
      2. Wheat consumptive use. The effective rainfall is determined by using U.S.D.A equation.
      3. Effective rainfall and irrigation water requirement for wheat in the study area.

Jensen-Haise formula is used to determine the potential evapo-transpiration, wheat consumptive use. The effective rainfall is determined by using U.S.D.A equation published in technical release no. 21, April 1967. The result of this study indicate that climatic conditions, potential evapo-transpiration, what consumptive use and the effective rainfall are different in Abha Region from values in An-Nemas region. Also the results indicate that the effective rainfall value is different from one type of soil to another in the same region. The dry farming of wheat in Abha area can not be practiced without the supplement of irrigation, but in An-Nemas rainfed cultivation of wheat can be practiced without any supplement of irrigation.
